You are correct in saying that Behr makes a terrible deck stain product. Deck Brightener – Wood deck brightener or deck neutralizer opens up the wood pores and restores the natural beauty of the wood grain. Deck brightener costs $9 to $30 per gallon and brightens approximately 250 to 300 square feet of surface area. However, the process to strip and stain a deck is labor-intensive, which makes it expensive to hire a professional. The average cost to power wash, stain, and seal a deck is $1.57 to $4.04 per square foot. A 12x12 deck costs $226 to $582 to stain when paying someone, or $59 to $176 to stain it yourself.
It is not necessary to stain under your deck unless you notice signs of rotted wood underneath. If your deck is built from pressure-treated lumber, it naturally protects against mold and mildew and keeps wood-boring insects out. Labor and prep work includes setup of equipment, moving any furniture, protecting surrounding areas, making minor wood repairs, power washing, and applying the stain.

I want to be a little skeptical but I’ve heard of this many times. It’s well documented, for example, that Walmart reduced Rubbermaid shelf space when Rubbermaid tried to increase its prices due to the increased cost of Rubbermaid’s raw materials. Make sure the rails and spindles are calculated separately in linear feet. Be sure it will be able to dry for 24 to 48 hours afterward.

Deck maintenance includes regular cleaning and sealing the wood to protect it from the harsh elements. Doing so ensures a lasting surface that will provide years of use and value. Power Wash – Power wash the deck to remove loose debris, sealant, and old deck stain that is peeling. A deck should be stained every two to three years to improve the appearance and increase the lifespan of the decking. Signs of graying, discoloration, mold, mildew, rot, or warping means the deck needs staining.
Deck Stain – Standard deck stain enhances the appearance of the wood and protects from UV damage but provides little protection from mildew and moisture. A clear waterproofing sealer should be applied after the stain drys. Premium deck stains cost $20 to $90 per gallon and cover 150 to 300 square feet on average. The average cost to stain a deck is $1.57 to $4.04 per square foot, with most homeowners paying someone $450 to $1,000 for materials and labor.

Spread out the puddles and work the stain into the wood using a broom or roller. If using a stain + sealant product, a second coat is usually optional. Clean with Deck Brightener – Apply a deck brightener to remove stains, residue, tannins, mildew, algae, and restore the wood to its original look.

A heavier sanding is necessary if the wood is warped or has water damage. Power washing raises the wood grain, which requires a second light sanding. As an article and comment contributor to the site, Scott has been around the pressure washing industry since attending college. In 1993 he started his first company called Oakland Pressure Wash specializing in exterior pressure washing and deck staining. That company evolved into OPW L.L.C. shortly thereafter concentrating more on exterior wood and deck restoration.
Waiting allows the wood to dry and ensures the best protection from UV rays and water damage. Contractors typically charge $1.00 to $2.50 per square foot to stain a deck depending on the process. For power washing, sanding, stripping, staining, and sealing contractors charge $2 to $4 per square foot. Deck stains are water or oil-based and come in a variety of different types.

All stain and prepping manufacturer directions were followed with our reviews and ratings. I gave 2 full coats to qty 12 , 12 ft new pressure treated boards. You should strip and brighten to remove the Penofing before switching stain brands. I have used the paint products and happy with those over the past 18 yrs. I called and they sent a coupon for another replacement and it did the same thing.
Thought I was doing the right thing by not shopping at a big box store. I was anticipating what you “experts” suggest in the way of a good quality better than box store choice…oh well. So it would seem the search for a quality deck stain is over that quick or is it? There is no doubt that some of the brands they sell are quality brands but the problem stems from where they are being sold.
Door coatings are not the same as deck coatings. I used Cabot on a refurbished deck 6 months ago and it looks like I stained it 5 years ago.I can’t believe I will have to restain my deck already… very dissatisfied with Cabot. Not sure if the versions are different or the same. We do know that Sikkens used to be a great stain but the formulas are not the same as they used to be since they have been bought and sold a couple of times.

Scott and his Deck Cleaning Michigan company have restored over 10,000 decks in the Metro Detroit area since the early years. He has become an authority in the deck restoration industry and has contributed to numerous wood restoration forums and informative sites. What this means for a deck stain company is that the formula has to be changed so it is cheaper to produce allowing them to sell at a lower price. A cheaper, less effective formula of deck stain that does not perform or hold up as well as it should. It is the sad truth and it preys upon unsuspecting homeowners every year.
Protect Surrounding Areas – To prevent damaging the landscaping, wet the surrounding area, and cover plants and shrubs with plastic sheeting. Tape off any exterior walls adjacent to the deck. Sand Again – Sand again using 50-grit sandpaper for hardwoods, and 80-grit sandpaper for softwoods. Make a third and final pass with the next finest sandpaper of 80 to 100-grit. Remove Furniture – Remove all furniture, BBQ pits, and other items to prepare for pressure washing.

A standard 12’ x 24’ deck, including rails and spindles, costs $548 to $1,298 to seal. The flats or planks need to be sealed every few years. Ok I understand deck stain manufactures are being forced to sell a lesser quality product to be able to sell there product in the Big Box stores. How can I know I will be getting the real good stuff @ the local builders supply stores?

You buy what you thought was a quality wood deck stain and a year after applying it, it begins to fail, leaving you confused, frustrated, and back to square one. There are plenty of good deck stain products on the market and the key to finding a quality wood stain is looking in the right place, or better yet, knowing where NOT to look. As you know, many of the big box stores carry a wide variety of deck stains. It’s convenient, fairly priced, and you will notice they carry some well-known brands of deck stain such as Cabot and Olympic. Sealant manufacturers recommend waiting 2 to 3 weeks before sealing a new deck made from pressure-treated wood. To preserve the wood grain of mahogany or cedar decking, wait 1 to 2 weeks before sealing.

Transparent or clear stains provide a natural wooden look and work best for decks in excellent condition. Solid stains look similar to paint and help conceal flaws in older wood. A semi-transparent stain partially highlights the wood grain with added gloss. Apply Sealant – If your stain doesn't include a sealant, apply a clear sealant/waterproofing product to protect the wood from moisture. Apply an additional coat of waterproofing over a stain + sealant in wet regions.

It is by far the best for appearance, longevity and looks…. Purchasing Olympic stain from a paint store. Is it a good quality stain that will last and be realitively easy to reapply when needed? Strip and brighten for prep and try TWP 1500 Series or Armstrong Csalrk wood stains. None on the internet gives a clean review.. It would be nice if someone ranked these stains for each type of application or requirement type.
Anytime between August and October is the ideal time to stain a deck. The best time to stain a deck is when the weather is dry with no signs of rain and between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit all day. A deeply burnished brown, Vintage Lantern captures bygone charm, with its true-to-nature vibrancy and realistic grain pattern. A burnt umber with onyx black lowlights, Spiced Rum resembles tropical ipe, with its true-to-nature vibrancy and realistic grain pattern. Featuring hints of nutmeg and ginger, Tiki Torch is an easygoing light brown designed to mimic tropical teak, with its true-to-nature vibrancy and realistic grain pattern. Like a stony pastoral lane, Gravel Path brings a pristine grey to the outdoors with its true-to-nature vibrancy and realistic grain pattern.
Last spring I purchased Arbour Coat from Hirshfield’s Benjiman Moore. I powerwashed and cleaned my deck and applied according to instructions. By fall, the finish was wearing off and dull. By the next spring the deck looked like it was 7 years old. The company would not stand behind the product and I will end up sanding, stripping, and re-doing it all over again this year.
There are combination deck + sealant products that make it cheap and easy to protect your deck. However, higher-end stains typically don't include the sealant. The rails and spindles add $11.84 to $23.77 per linear foot. A pale, sandy taupe, Rope Swing is a carefree color for a place of outdoor leisure, with its true-to-nature vibrancy and realistic grain pattern. As a homeowner, you know that regular maintenance can not only prolong the life of your property, it can also increase its curb appeal and value. Nothing is truer when it comes to the exterior surfaces of your home like a deck.
One gallon of deck paint costs $30 to $50 and covers approximately 300 to 400 square feet. The average labor cost to stain a deck is $1 to $3 per square foot, not including the price of materials. Labor accounts for 75% of the total cost depending on the deck's condition, whether the deck needs sanding or stripping, and the number of coats of stain applied. Deck stains provide 200 to 300 square feet of coverage per gallon. You'll need 2 gallons of stain to cover a 500 square foot deck.
